The annual A Capitol Fourth concert in Washington, D.C. is set to proceed as planned, despite the sweltering heat wave that has settled over the nation's capital. Due to the extreme heat, public entry to the concert will be delayed until 7 p.m. Officials urge attendees to take precautions, particularly those who are vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. Guests are advised to bring plenty of water and hydrate regularly, with non-glass water bottles allowed inside the venue.
The National Weather Service has issued extreme heat alerts across more than two dozen states, with heat index values expected to exceed 100 degrees in many metropolitan areas. In Washington, forecasters predict "feels like" temperatures could approach 110 degrees during the day before easing after sunset.
The extreme heat has already forced the temporary closure of the Great American State Fair on the National Mall, with attendees told it would reopen at 5 p.m. The fair, which had attracted a healthy crowd, had earlier been treated to multiple practice run flyovers ahead of Saturday's extravaganza.
Organizers have modified Saturday's schedule to accommodate the weather, with entry to the Washington Monument grounds for the Freedom 250 fireworks delayed until 5 p.m. Additional cooling stations, drinking water, misting areas, and medical personnel will be available throughout the event grounds.
Transportation officials are taking steps to deal with the heat, with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority coating thousands of feet of rail with reflective white paint to reduce heat absorption and lower the risk of tracks warping as temperatures soar.
Federal and local officials are urging anyone planning to spend extended time outdoors over the holiday weekend to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, limit strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke as dangerous temperatures persist across much of the region.
The state fair, which is part of the America 250 festivities and runs on the National Mall through July 10, is encouraging attendees to drink plenty of water, find shade, and take frequent breaks while the dangerous heat continues.
The airspace restrictions tied to the military flyovers and rehearsal flights will temporarily suspend operations at Reagan Washington National Airport from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday and again from noon until midnight Saturday, preventing arrivals and departures during those windows.
