Mother and Sister Escape Abusive Father, Daughter Speaks Out

The memories of Luke Hart are a poignant reminder of the devastating effects of coercive control and domestic abuse. The eldest of the three Hart children, Luke's early childhood was spent on a farm in Cambridgeshire, where his family grew their own food and raised livestock.

However, things took a turn for the worse when his family moved to Moulton in Lincolnshire, where Luke's father, Lance, struggled to find work and became increasingly angry and resentful. His behavior became more and more controlling, with Luke and his siblings having to be careful around him to avoid his wrath.

As Luke became a teenager, Lance's control over his wife and children tightened, with him requiring perfection in everything. Luke distinctly recalls one occasion when he arrived home 10 minutes late from school and was blamed for his food being left to get cold.

When Luke finally escaped to Warwick University to study engineering, he began to realize the full extent of his father's abuse. He and his brother Ryan had been trying to help their mother and sister Claire, who had multiple sclerosis, leave their controlling husband, but Lance's grip on them was too strong.

Just days after they had finally made their escape, Lance took their lives and then his own, leaving behind a 12-page suicide note. Luke was left shattered and exhausted, feeling like he was living in a surreal television program.

For a year, Luke and Ryan stayed in the house they had rented for their mother and sister, along with their dogs, until work forced them to move away. They set up a company called CoCo Awareness to help professionals understand coercive control and domestic abuse, sharing their devastating family story.

Coercive control, a term coined by Professor Evan Stark in 2007, is a form of domestic abuse that doesn't always include physical violence. It involves the perpetrator establishing a sense of fear and control over the victim, often through subtle and manipulative means.

Coercive control was made a criminal offense in England and Wales in 2015, and since then, nearly all those convicted have been men. Research has shown that the links between coercive control and domestic homicide are very clear, and coercive control's presence is a much better indicator of risk than physical violence.

For Luke, the experience has been a painful but healing journey. He has found solace in a Christian faith and continues to advocate for greater understanding and support for survivors of coercive control and domestic abuse.

As Luke reflects on his family's experience, he emphasizes the importance of providing long-term solutions for survivors. "Survivors need more than temporary stop gaps," he says. "How do we provide a pathway to freedom from domestic abuse?"

Today, Luke and his brother Ryan live in West London, but they continue to work together to raise awareness about coercive control and domestic abuse. Their story is a powerful reminder of the devastating effects of this form of abuse and the importance of providing support and resources for survivors.
