The deep-sea has long been a mysterious and largely unexplored frontier, but a recent discovery has shed new light on one of its most elusive residents - the goblin shark.
The species, characterized by its distinctive pinkish-brown color and flabby body, has been spotted in its natural habitat for the first time, providing scientists with a unique opportunity to learn more about its behavior and habits.
The sighting took place on a seamount near Jarvis Island in 2019, where researchers were able to observe the shark up close and gather crucial data on its depth range and geographic distribution.
The discovery has revealed that the goblin shark lives both deeper and farther across the Pacific than previously believed, significantly expanding its known geographic range.
Researchers say that this new information could be used to improve conservation efforts and help protect the species, which is considered to be one of the most iconic and charismatic deep-sea creatures.
Lead researcher Aaron Judah described the experience of seeing the goblin shark alive and healthy in its natural habitat as a "unique honour", and noted that the observation from the slope of the Tonga Trench was nearly 700 metres deeper than the species was previously known to live.
The findings have also highlighted the importance of continued exploration and research into the deep-ocean, with Judah stating that "there is still so much to explore" in this largely uncharted environment.
The inclusion of the goblin shark in regional management and nation biodiversity lists is now a possibility, thanks to the newly expanded geographic range of the species.
