A family from California is claiming that they were targeted with anti-White remarks during a vacation at the Kaanapali Alii resort on West Maui. The individuals range in age from 17 to 62 years old. According to local reports, the assault occurred around 10 p.m. on July 17th at the popular vacation destination. The victims stated that their family was attacked after a group of young locals allegedly threw chairs and engaged in violence against them.
The situation started escalating much earlier in the evening, as neighbors from the nearby Whalers Village claimed that the Maui locals were harassing tourists before the altercation transpired at the resort.
According to The New York Post news outlet, the family of five has contacted the police, detailing the racism-inspired attack. The suspect, a 20-year-old Makawao man, was arrested on suspicion of assault, but later released as detectives continue the investigation.
Although the family strongly suspects the assault was racially motivated, the local authorities have not classified the incident as a hate crime.
