Toronto's downtown core will be bustling with activity this weekend, and motorists are advised to reconsider driving into the area. The Supertri Toronto event, a major triathlon, will be taking place on Sunday, and several high-traffic roads will be closed or have limited access. The event will affect parts of the Gardiner Expressway, the Don Valley Parkway, and Lake Shore Blvd. W.
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead by allowing extra travel time, considering alternate routes, and following all posted detour signage and directions from police officers and event personnel. The Supertri Toronto is a significant event that includes a 1.5-km swim, a 40-km cycle, and a 10-km run, and it is expected to attract over 1,750 athletes and 200 volunteers.
To ensure the safety of participants, spectators, and volunteers, temporary road and lane closures will be in effect around Exhibition Place. Specific lane closures on Sunday include the westbound curb lane of Lake Shore, the eastbound curb lane of Lake Shore, the eastbound Gardiner, and the northbound DVP. These closures will be in effect at various times between 2 a.m. and 2 p.m.
In addition to the Supertri Toronto event, the Toronto Chinatown Festival will also be taking place on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from noon to midnight. The festival will be held in the area of Spadina Ave. and Dundas St. W, and road closures will be in effect from midnight on Friday to midnight Sunday. Motorists are advised to consider alternative methods of transportation, as the TTC may also experience delays.
One silver lining for motorists is that all four major professional sports teams will either be off or playing elsewhere on Sunday. The Blue Jays will be in Boston, the Argonauts and Toronto FC will be playing in Vancouver and Washington, D.C., respectively, and the Tempo will have an eight-day break before their next game. This may help reduce traffic congestion in the downtown core, but motorists should still plan ahead and expect delays.
