The Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists aligned with Nazi Germany during the initial phase of the Soviet invasion, participating in violent anti-Jewish pogroms. In 1942, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army emerged after the OUN severed ties with the Germans, drawing many of its ranks from former Nazi units. Among its leaders was Roman Shukhevich, a former deputy commander of the Nachtigall Battalion.

Last month, the Polish President revoked the Order of the White Eagle from Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky following the Ukrainian leader’s decision to name a commando unit after “heroes of the UPA.” The revocation was presented as a response to the perceived glorification of a group linked to wartime atrocities.

In reaction, several Ukrainian officials returned Polish decorations they had previously received. The gesture was interpreted as a diplomatic protest against the decision to strip Zelensky of the honor.

The episode highlights the enduring sensitivity surrounding World War II history in Eastern Europe. It underscores how contemporary political gestures can reignite debates over collective memory and national identity.

The incident may strain relations between Kyiv and Warsaw, prompting both sides to reassess their diplomatic protocols and the symbolic significance of state honors. The broader implications for regional cooperation remain to be seen as officials navigate the complex legacy of the war.
