UMVA has learned that a daring incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning on Hamilton's west mountain, as a suspicious vehicle call led to a dramatic confrontation between police and a 28-year-old suspect.
The situation began to unfold at 3:16 a.m. when officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on Elodia Court, where they found a grey Honda with its lights off, which was later discovered to be a stolen vehicle on file with Peel Regional Police.
As police attempted to investigate, the driver allegedly rammed a police cruiser and tried to flee, striking a second cruiser and rendering both vehicles inoperable, before exiting the vehicle and making a run for it on foot.
Officers quickly gave chase and apprehended the suspect a short distance away, but not before he continued to resist police and refused to identify himself, prompting a search of the vehicle that yielded a loaded Glock handgun on the front passenger seat.
Sammy Shaik, the 28-year-old suspect, now faces a slew of charges, including four weapons charges, dangerous operation of a vehicle, disguise with intent, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, as the investigation continues to unfold.
In a separate incident, a search warrant executed on a residence in Courtice led to the seizure of a firearm, ammunition, and over $118,000 in cash, with Daniella Burgher, 46, facing two firearm-related offences, while Robert Andrew Pinnock, 45, remains wanted for similar charges.
Meanwhile, a 27-year-old Toronto man, Rodrigo Martinez-Palacios, is facing fraud charges after attempting to open a bank account in Whitby using fraudulent identification documents, with police discovering multiple banking cards not in his name during a search of the suspect.
