The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is undergoing a significant change in its marked patrol vehicles after more than three decades. The national police service has announced plans to update the look of their front-line cars and trucks, giving them a more modern and distinctive appearance.
The updated design features white doors on a black base, along with high-visibility, reflective graphics that ensure the vehicles can be easily recognized in all conditions, day or night, in rural or urban settings, and across Canada's diverse climates. This design allows for local markings indicating the province, territory, or municipality the car is assigned to, while preserving a consistent, recognizable national RCMP identity.
The current design, featuring red, yellow, and blue stripes and a large RCMP/GRC crest over the door of an all-white vehicle, was introduced in 1994 as a cost-saving measure. This redesign was also prompted by the federal government's efforts in the mid-1990s to standardize branding and visual motifs across federal departments.
The new cruisers will feature white doors on a black base, with distinctive reflective graphics that promise to be clearly visible regardless of the lighting conditions. RCMP vehicles in their current liveries will remain in service until replaced, which means the old and new look will operate side-by-side until the old cruisers are retired.
Aside from being Canada's national police and investigative force, thousands of RCMP members serve as the local police in hundreds of communities across Canada, operating out of more than 700 detachments nationwide.
