Tuchel Explains Decision to Bench Saka in Recent Match

Bukayo Saka delivered a decisive performance against France, securing a hat-trick and the match ball as England claimed third place at the World Cup.

Saka had been managing an Achilles issue throughout the tournament and was unexpectedly omitted from the squad against Argentina, even as England sought attacking impetus in the second half.

The winger started only three of England's eight matches. When questioned on Saka's limited involvement, the head coach stated the player "did everything right."

The coach explained that he sensed Morgan Rogers could influence the semi-final, and noted that game flow and cramping forced late changes, with Saka proving his importance when called upon.

Saka was named Player of the Match for his contributions. He acknowledged a desire for more minutes but emphasized letting his performances speak.

On his fitness, Saka offered a blunt response: "I'm fit."

The head coach expressed concern over the physical toll of the third-place match, noting France benefited from an extra recovery day and shorter travel after the semi-finals.

He described a strong first half followed by a strained second, attributing fatigue to scheduling, altitude, and heat encountered by his squad.

Despite physical strain, the coach praised the team's mentality and resilience through adversity, calling the bronze-medal finish a reflection of something special built within the group.
