Bear Spotted Perched on New Mexico Utility Pole in Unlikely

The recent viral video of a bear perched precariously on a utility pole in rural New Mexico has captured the attention of many after the unusual encounter reportedly ended in the bear's death.

The video, recorded Monday near Gladstone, New Mexico, shows the bear panting and trying to maintain its balance high above the ground on the crossarm of the utility pole. The New Mexico Department of Wildlife and the U.S. Department of the Interior were notified of the situation.

Wildlife experts explain that bears can climb utility poles when startled by people, traffic, or dogs, treating them much like trees while trying to escape danger. In this case, the bear's decision to climb the pole likely saved its life at first, but ultimately led to its demise.

The Department of the Interior and the New Mexico Department of Wildlife were unable to safely rescue the bear before it died. Wildlife officials had concerns that tranquilizing the animal while it remained atop the pole could have caused it to fall.

A similar incident in Arizona in 2021 ended differently, with wildlife officials successfully rescuing a bear that had climbed a utility pole. The recent incident serves as a reminder of the importance of wildlife safety and the need for caution when approaching bears in the wild.

Wildlife experts note that bears can be unpredictable, and their behavior in such situations may be influenced by various factors, including their age, size, and environment. In this case, the bear's decision to climb the utility pole likely reflected its attempt to escape danger.
