Surveillance footage captured the suspect cleaning the back seat of his vehicle after the victim vanished, and officers observed wounds on the suspect that appeared consistent with stab injuries, which he claimed were inflicted by alleged attackers.
Investigators used the department’s Real Time Crime Center, surveillance cameras, and cellphone data to reconstruct the couple’s movements from the victim’s apartment to a movie theater and then to a remote desert location.
A concession cup recovered at the scene linked the burial site to the couple’s date, and detectives uncovered evidence that the suspect had traveled to the secluded area multiple times before the disappearance, though a motive remains undetermined.
The victim was reported missing on July 7 after several days without contact, prompting her family to note the unusual silence given their frequent communication.
A search warrant executed at the victim’s apartment revealed her cellphone left inside and her dog locked in a crate without food or water for days, suggesting a suspicious environment.
Detectives later discovered a shallow grave in a remote desert area north of the valley; while the medical examiner continues to assess the cause of death, clothing and other physical evidence matched the victim, confirming the remains.
The investigation concluded within four days, aided by the Special Investigations Unit, a federal task force, and advanced investigative technology.
Police were able to pinpoint the suspect’s presence at the victim’s apartment, the movie theater, and track cellphone usage across multiple locations, which together led to solving the case.
The suspect, who has a prior record of theft-related offenses and was on probation at the time of arrest, is being held on a $2 million cash bond.
Earlier legal proceedings show the suspect was sentenced for impersonating an employee and stealing from two gas stations, pleading guilty to criminal impersonation and receiving two years of supervised probation.
Investigators continue to await additional forensic testing and the medical examiner’s findings to determine a definitive motive.
