AOC Mimics Black Accent at Tennessee Rally, Sparking Criticism

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez appeared at a campaign rally in Tennessee to support congressional candidate Justin Pearson, drawing attention for her vocal delivery during the speech.

The New York Democrat addressed attendees with phrasing and cadence that some observers described as mimicking Southern Black vernacular, a choice that sparked discussion online.

During the event, Ocasio-Cortez referenced a prior rally in Montgomery, Alabama, where she appeared alongside Representative Ayanna Pressley, whom she referred to using a familiar informal title.

She urged supporters from northern states to travel south to oppose Republican policies, citing Pearson’s expulsion from office following his demands for gun violence legislation.

Footage from the Montgomery appearance earlier this year showed Ocasio-Cortez without the same speech patterns, prompting questions about the shift in presentation.

The Tennessee rally was not the first instance of altered accent use. In April 2025, Ocasio-Cortez spoke at a rally with Senator Bernie Sanders in Idaho using a cadence compared by some to former Vice President Kamala Harris.

The pattern has fueled debate over political performativity and cultural representation in campaign settings.
