A wave of enforcement actions swept across the United Kingdom this summer, with the Home Office releasing footage of arrests focused on individuals seeking asylum who were found working as delivery couriers. The operation, conducted between July 20th and 27th, involved stops and questioning of 1,780 people suspected of illegal employment.
Current regulations generally prohibit those awaiting asylum claim processing from taking on paid work. While a basic level of government support is provided, many asylum seekers find themselves facing severe financial hardship and destitution, pushing some to seek income through the gig economy.
The Home Office’s efforts extend beyond delivery services, encompassing a broader strategy to deter irregular migration. A recent agreement with France centers on a “one in, one out” deportation policy, designed to discourage attempts to cross the English Channel illegally.
The intent is clear: to send a firm message that unauthorized entry will be met with swift return to France. As of last month, 42 individuals had been deported under this new arrangement, marking the initial phase of the policy’s implementation.
However, the effectiveness of the deportation strategy is already being questioned. Reports indicate that at least one individual from the first group deported has successfully re-entered the UK, highlighting the challenges of preventing re-migration and the resilience of those seeking refuge.
