A terrifying scene unfolded in Birmingham city centre as a double-decker bus became the target of a reckless attack. Shocking footage captured the moment a figure launched fireworks at the vehicle from what appeared to be a homemade “rocket launcher.”
The incident occurred while the bus was stopped at traffic lights, amidst a night of escalating disorder. The brazen act was just one of several fireworks-related incidents reported since Halloween, creating a climate of fear and disruption.
Police responded to multiple reports of disturbances, focusing on the New Street area. Officers themselves were targeted with fireworks, highlighting the dangerous and volatile nature of the situation.
Authorities have arrested ten individuals, ranging in age from 13 to 23, in connection with the incidents. One 18-year-old man, Mohammed Zerfa, has been charged with threatening behaviour and assaulting a police officer and remains in custody.
Investigations are ongoing, with seven others released on bail with restrictions preventing them from entering the city centre. Police are meticulously reviewing footage and gathering information to identify all those involved.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a direct result of the attack on the bus. However, the incident underscores the potential for serious harm caused by the irresponsible use of fireworks.
Law enforcement officials have made it clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated. A visible police presence will be maintained in the city centre to deter further incidents and ensure public safety.
The legal ramifications for illegal firework activity are severe. Individuals can face unlimited fines and even imprisonment for up to six months for selling or using fireworks unlawfully. On-the-spot fines of £90 can also be issued.
Current regulations prohibit the purchase of “adult” fireworks by anyone under the age of 18. Setting off fireworks outside of designated times – generally between 11pm and 7am – is also illegal, with exceptions made for specific holidays like Bonfire Night, New Year’s Eve, Diwali, and Chinese New Year.
Police are urging anyone with information related to these incidents to come forward, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining a safe environment for residents, visitors, and workers in Birmingham.
