A morning commute shattered on an east London high street as a double-decker bus careened off the road and slammed into a local shop. The impact, occurring around 9am on Thursday, sent shockwaves through the area and left onlookers reeling.
The 474 bus, en route to Manor Park, mounted the curb on Station Road and crashed directly into an off-licence. Witnesses described a scene of sudden chaos, a jarring collision that instantly altered the rhythm of the day.
Approximately twenty passengers were aboard the bus at the time of the incident. Emergency services swiftly responded, with ambulances and police converging on the scene as the bus ended up positioned sideways across the road.
Firefighters worked quickly to secure the area, holding back concerned members of the public while assessing the damage and ensuring the safety of those involved. The immediate priority was to provide assistance and support to anyone affected by the crash.
One person was transported to a hospital for treatment, though initial reports indicate injuries were not life-threatening. A full investigation, led by the Metropolitan Police, is now underway to determine the cause of the collision.
Ninoshan Jeyaseelan, the shopkeeper and owner of the impacted off-licence, described the crash as “just insane.” He recounted a “big bang” and noted the bus driver was visibly shaken by the event.
Despite the force of the impact, Mr. Jeyaseelan reported that the damage to his shop appeared to be relatively minor. He expressed uncertainty about the recovery process, but offered a profound sense of relief that no one was seriously hurt.
The incident has left the community shaken, but grateful that the outcome wasn’t far worse. The investigation continues, seeking answers to understand how this dramatic event unfolded.
