During a recent investment forum in Washington, D.C., former President Trump recounted a perceived disconnect between American perspectives and those held by Saudi Arabian counterparts regarding transgender athletes in women’s sports.
Trump described his surprise witnessing a U.S. congressman advocate for the inclusion of transgender women in women’s athletics, specifically recalling a weightlifting competition where a transgender athlete significantly outperformed a female champion.
He detailed the stark physical difference, stating the athlete weighed 119 pounds more than the previous champion – a highly accomplished competitor – and achieved the victory despite being considered an average lifter before transitioning.
According to Trump, Saudi observers present at the forum expressed bewilderment at the concept, questioning the rationale behind allowing biological males to compete against women, a practice they do not embrace within their own country.
He relayed their incredulity, stating they asked, “What do you mean women are playing against men? No, that doesn't happen, does it?” Trump then characterized the American approach as “crazy” in their view.
This discussion unfolded against the backdrop of ongoing legal battles concerning transgender athletes’ participation in sports, including a recent amicus brief filed by 130 congressional Democrats supporting transgender athletes’ rights.
The brief urged the Supreme Court to support rulings allowing transgender athletes to compete in accordance with their gender identity, specifically referencing cases involving athletes in West Virginia and Idaho.
Prominent lawmakers, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Hakeem Jeffries, and Nancy Pelosi, were among those signing the brief, demonstrating significant Democratic support for transgender inclusion.
However, a recent New York Times/Ipsos poll revealed a contrasting sentiment among the broader American public, with a substantial majority – including a majority of Democrats – opposing the participation of transgender women in women’s sports.
The poll indicated that 79% of respondents believe biological males identifying as women should not compete against women, a figure that included 67% of those identifying as Democrats or leaning Democrat.
This divergence highlights a complex and deeply debated issue, revealing a significant gap between the views of some political leaders and the prevailing opinions of many Americans.
