Aston Villa are nearing a deal to sign Portuguese midfielder Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich.
The 30-year-old spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, where he impressed in central midfield. Tottenham held an option to make the move permanent but instead opted to pursue Sandro Tonali.
Palhinha has since returned to Bayern Munich, who are now eager to offload him on a permanent basis. Discussions between the two clubs are advancing, with an agreement expected in the near term.
The midfielder is anticipated to travel to the United Kingdom shortly to undergo a medical and finalize his contract with Aston Villa. The club has identified a need for greater physicality and defensive stability in the middle of the park.
Aston Villa have dealt with injury to Amadou Onana and sanctioned Youri Tielemans’ departure, leaving a gap in midfield quality. Palhinha brings proven Premier League experience from spells at Tottenham and Fulham.
His arrival should allow for a swift transition, with the player expected to make an immediate impact. Palhinha has faced ongoing uncertainty over his future in recent seasons.
Joining Aston Villa offers him the prospect of regular football at a competitive level and a realistic opportunity to challenge for trophies. The move represents a stable next step after a turbulent period.
