The glittering world of Miss Universe has descended into a shocking scandal, far removed from the poised smiles and dazzling gowns. A dark cloud now hangs over the organization, with accusations of criminal activity reaching its highest levels.
Raul Rocha, co-owner of the Miss Universe Organization and also serving as a Guatemalan consul, faces serious allegations. Mexican authorities have accused him of leading a criminal enterprise involved in trafficking drugs, weapons, and fuel across the border between Guatemala and Mexico.
Prosecutors allege Rocha’s organization smuggles fuel via the Usumacinta River, transferring it to trucks destined for Queretaro. An arrest warrant was requested earlier this month, citing his alleged involvement in organized crime and firearms trafficking. Evidence reportedly includes records of substantial monetary contributions to the syndicate – one payment alone totaling a significant sum.
The accusations paint a disturbing picture, suggesting Rocha’s alleged criminal network has cultivated connections with politicians and authorities at all levels of government. These connections, authorities claim, were deliberately established to facilitate the illegal trade of hydrocarbons, narcotics, and weaponry.
Adding another layer to the unfolding drama, Rocha reportedly attempted to negotiate a plea bargain with authorities, offering information in exchange for immunity. Despite the gravity of these allegations, Rocha has continued to post on social media, sharing messages of support for the future of Miss Universe, but remaining silent on the charges against him.
The turmoil doesn’t end with Rocha. Jakapong “Anne” Jakrajutatip, the other co-owner of the Miss Universe Organization, is also facing legal challenges. An arrest warrant has been issued in Thailand in connection with a fraud case.
Jakrajutatip, the CEO who acquired the Miss Universe rights in 2022, failed to appear at a civil hearing and is now considered a flight risk. The charges stem from a lawsuit filed by a plastic surgeon who alleges he was defrauded while investing in corporate bonds sold by her company.
This legal battle follows Jakrajutatip’s resignation from all positions within the company earlier this year, after accusations of falsifying financial statements. Despite stepping down, she remains the largest shareholder, and her current whereabouts are unknown.
The recent Miss Universe pageant in Bangkok was already marred by controversy before these revelations. Contestants walked out of a pre-pageant event following a disrespectful exchange with the eventual winner, Miss Mexico. A judge also resigned, alleging pre-selection of finalists based on personal connections.
The ownership of Miss Universe has been in flux, with Jakrajutatip’s JKN Global Group initially acquiring the rights before selling a half-share to Rocha’s Legacy Holding Group USA. Now, with both owners embroiled in legal battles, the future of the iconic pageant hangs in the balance.
