A festive scene turned unsettling in Innisfil last month when a York Regional Police officer allegedly drove an SUV onto a pedestrian walkway during the Santa Claus Parade. The incident, occurring amidst cheering crowds and excited children, has resulted in serious charges against the 53-year-old officer.
The Ontario Provincial Police confirmed the officer, a resident of Innisfil, is facing a charge of dangerous operation of a vehicle. Investigators say the events unfolded over a 15-minute period on November 23rd, between 2:20 and 2:35 p.m., disrupting a beloved community tradition.
The situation began in the Sobey’s parking lot, where the officer’s grey Audi SUV was initially denied access to the parade route. Witnesses then observed the vehicle maneuvering through the Shoppers Drug Mart/Scotiabank Plaza area on Innisfil Beach Road.
Unable to navigate the blocked exit due to the parade, the officer allegedly drove the SUV over a curb and onto a pedestrian catwalk and trail. This allowed the vehicle to bypass the parade route, ultimately exiting onto Jans Boulevard.
Remarkably, despite the potentially dangerous maneuver, no injuries were reported. The OPP immediately launched an investigation, seeking witnesses to piece together the full sequence of events.
Authorities have secured images of the vehicle involved and are urging anyone with information to come forward. The incident underscores the OPP’s commitment to public safety, particularly during large-scale community gatherings.
“Public safety is at the forefront of everything we do,” stated the OPP, emphasizing the importance of protecting spectators, including families and children, at such events. The officer is scheduled to appear in court on January 15, 2026.
The South Simcoe Police Service has affirmed its dedication to maintaining safe traffic flow throughout community celebrations, highlighting the gravity of the alleged actions and the need for a thorough investigation.
