An 88-year-old Army veteran, forced to work at a Michigan supermarket to survive, has become the unlikely recipient of overwhelming generosity. Australian influencer Sam Weidenhofer noticed the message and, intrigued, teamed up with fellow influencer Mike McKinstry to find the veteran. They located Bambas at a Meijer store in Brighton, Michigan, and approached him with a question that would change his life.
“Why do you have to keep working?” Weidenhofer asked, capturing the moment on video. Bambas, with a quiet dignity, explained a heartbreaking reality. He had retired from General Motors in 1999, only to have his future shattered when the company declared bankruptcy in 2012.

Seven years after his wife’s passing, Bambas continues to work five days a week, eight hours a day, simply to make ends meet. When asked about his dreams, his answer was achingly simple: “Live somewhat the life I was hoping for.”

As of late Friday, the fundraiser had amassed over $1.7 million. The funds will directly support Bambas, covering living expenses, medical care, and allowing him to finally experience some of the simple joys life has to offer.
