A heated dispute erupted between a U.S. Representative and Immigration and Customs Enforcement following a recent operation in Tucson, Arizona. Representative Adelita Grijalva alleges she was physically assaulted by agents during an immigration raid, a claim ICE vehemently denies.
ICE officials accuse Grijalva of actively interfering with a mass arrest operation, stating she joined a “rioting crowd” and attempted to obstruct law enforcement. This accusation directly contradicts the Representative’s account of being “pushed aside and pepper sprayed” while seeking information near a local restaurant.
The operation itself stemmed from a long-term investigation into a transnational criminal organization. Federal partners and ICE agents targeted individuals involved in labor exploitation, tax violations, and multiple immigration offenses, ultimately leading to the arrest of 46 people.
According to ICE, the scene quickly escalated as over 100 individuals arrived and attempted to hinder the operation. The situation devolved into violence, with reports of officers being assaulted and vehicle tires slashed.
Grijalva publicly criticized ICE, labeling the agency as “lawless” and accusing them of operating without transparency or due process. She expressed concern over the raid’s impact on a beloved local business, Taco Giro, a family-owned restaurant deeply rooted in the community.
Department of Homeland Security officials swiftly challenged Grijalva’s claims of being pepper sprayed. They stated she was merely near someone who was sprayed during a confrontation with law enforcement, while actively obstructing their work.
Two individuals connected to the protesting crowd were arrested: one for assaulting a federal officer and another for damaging a government vehicle. The incident also resulted in injuries to two members of the Homeland Security Investigations Special Response Team.
