A fierce rebuttal has erupted from the highest ranks of British law enforcement, directly challenging outlandish claims made by former US President Donald Trump regarding the safety of London.
Trump recently ignited controversy with graphic assertions about violence in the city, alleging a surge in stabbings and a dramatic decline from the London his mother once knew. He also renewed attacks on London’s Mayor, Sadiq Khan, repeating previously debunked accusations.
Sir Mark Rowley, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, responded with unwavering clarity, dismissing Trump’s statements as “complete nonsense.” He presented a stark contrast to the former president’s narrative, emphasizing London’s relative safety on a global scale.
Rowley revealed that London’s homicide rate is demonstrably lower than every state in the United States, and significantly lower than major cities worldwide, including Toronto, Paris, Brussels, and Berlin. He underscored that while not without its challenges, London remains a remarkably safe urban center.
The Commissioner passionately argued for a strong defense against what he described as politically motivated attempts to discredit London. He believes a firm response is crucial to counter these damaging narratives.
While directly addressing the safety concerns, Rowley deliberately refrained from engaging in a personal dispute with Trump regarding his comments about Mayor Khan, stating he would leave such “political sparring” to the politicians themselves.
Trump’s previous accusations against Mayor Khan have been consistently false, including claims of a desire to implement Sharia law in London. These attacks have become a recurring theme in the former president’s public statements.
Mayor Khan himself has responded to Trump’s relentless criticism with characteristic wit, playfully suggesting the former president harbors a “crush” and that he’s taken up “squatters’ rights” inside Trump’s mind.
