A moment of carelessness, a cut hand, and a hidden blade – these seemingly unrelated events unraveled a web of legal trouble for Shaun Hogg. The incident began with a simple injury, but quickly exposed a secret he’d been keeping.
Hogg’s misfortune stemmed from the possession of a samurai sword, a katana exceeding the legal length of 50cm within the UK. While exceptions exist for historical reenactors and collectors of antiques, his circumstances didn’t qualify.
The court revealed Hogg had researched recent changes to blade ownership laws, specifically those targeting “zombie-style” knives and machetes. He mistakenly believed these changes allowed him to own the katana, despite its prohibited length.
The sword itself was initially purchased for display, an ornamental piece intended to adorn his home. However, the legality of possession hinged on meeting specific criteria, criteria Hogg failed to satisfy.
The judge handed down a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, alongside a mandatory rehabilitation program. This wasn’t the extent of his legal woes, however.
Hogg also admitted to violating a three-year ban from Colchester city centre, a restriction imposed after a reckless incident in October 2023. He had collided with a police vehicle while attempting to flee officers in a stolen disability vehicle.
Further compounding his problems, Hogg confessed to kicking a police officer while detained in his cell. He claimed the contact was accidental, a claim the court didn’t fully accept.
He was ordered to compensate the officer with £50 and received an additional £50 fine, adding to existing court costs and penalties totaling £264. The financial burden was significant.
Standing before the court, Hogg made a stark declaration: “I’m going to change. I’ve had enough.” It was a plea for a fresh start, a promise to leave his troubled past behind.
