The cost of computer memory, once a predictable component of a PC build, has skyrocketed to the point of becoming a running joke – a spare RAM stick now feels like a viable retirement plan. This isn’t just impacting dedicated PC enthusiasts; the price surge is poised to dramatically affect laptop buyers as well, delivering a blow to those seeking new machines.
Recent analysis suggests a shift is coming in laptop specifications, and it’s not a positive one. While current laptop prices might seem stable due to existing inventory, a wave of changes is predicted to hit by spring 2026, leading to noticeable price fluctuations and, crucially, reduced memory configurations.
The standard expectations for laptop memory are being rewritten. Previously, 8GB was common in budget laptops, 16GB in mid-range models, and up to 64GB in premium machines. Now, mid-range laptops are likely to increasingly feature only 8GB, and even high-end laptops will likely start with a minimum of 16GB.
The situation isn’t entirely bleak for the budget sector. Windows 11’s increased system requirements are making it difficult to drop below 8GB of RAM, meaning at least that baseline will likely hold. However, expect to see prices rise before any further reductions in memory capacity occur.
This trend isn’t limited to laptops. Smartphones are also facing similar cuts in memory specifications. Entry-level and mid-range phones will likely revert to current minimums – 4GB and under 12GB respectively – while high-end phones will maintain 12GB rather than pushing for the newer 16GB standard.
