A weekend of quiet resolve shattered in Syria as two U.S. Army soldiers fell victim to a brutal attack by Islamic terrorists. The news brought a wave of grief and a solemn promise of retribution, marking a stark reminder of the ongoing dangers faced by American troops deployed abroad.
Sergeant Edgar Brian Torres Tovar, 25, of Grimes, Iowa, and Sergeant William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown, Iowa, were identified as the fallen heroes. Both served with the 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment, deployed to the Middle East as part of Operation Inherent Resolve – the mission to support forces combating ISIS.
The attack occurred near Palmyra, Syria, during a crucial meeting with local partners aimed at bolstering counter-ISIS operations. A lone gunman, believed to be affiliated with ISIS, opened fire on the soldiers and a civilian interpreter, unleashing a sudden and devastating assault.
Three additional Iowa National Guard soldiers were wounded in the firefight. Two were medically evacuated and are reported to be in stable condition, while a third received treatment locally and is recovering well. Their identities are being withheld in accordance with Department of War policy.
News of Sergeant Howard’s death resonated deeply with his family. His father, Meskwaki Nation Police Chief Jeffrey Bunn, shared a poignant message on social media, remembering his son as a dedicated soldier who consistently put himself on the line for others. “We will see you again son, until then we have it from here,” he wrote.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds ordered flags across the state to be flown at half-staff, acknowledging the profound loss and expressing the state’s collective mourning. She emphasized the honor with which both soldiers served, and extended heartfelt condolences to their families.
The loss has ignited a firm resolve for a strong response. Officials have vowed that the sacrifice of these American soldiers will not be in vain, promising a decisive and forceful reaction to the attack. The commitment to avenge their deaths is unwavering.
Major General Stephen Osborn, adjutant general of the Iowa National Guard, honored the memory of Howard and Torres Tovar, describing them as dedicated professionals and cherished members of the Guard family.
