Lionel Messi currently leads the World Cup Golden Boot standings with eight goals. Kylian Mbappe sits level on goals but trails due to one fewer assist.
If players finish tied on goals and assists, the award goes to the player with the fewest minutes played at the tournament.
Mbappe claimed the Golden Boot at the previous World Cup, while Harry Kane topped the scoring charts in 2018. Should either win this year, it would mark the first time a player has earned multiple Golden Boots in tournament history.

Messi has never won the Golden Boot but received the Golden Ball in the previous finals as the competition's best player. Spain's Mikel Oyarzabal has five goals and would need four in the final to overtake the leaders.
The current standings show Messi and Mbappe on eight goals, Erling Haaland on seven, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane on six, and Ousmane Dembele and Oyarzabal on five.
Seven former Golden Boot winners have scored in the third-place play-off, with four needing those goals to secure the award. Thomas Muller, Davor Suker, Salvatore Schillaci, and Leonidas all scored in that match to win the accolade.

The third-place play-off has been a fixture of the World Cup since 1954 and is often viewed as one of the least appealing matches in the sport.
