A chilling scene unfolded Sunday afternoon at Hanningfield Reservoir near Chelmsford, as authorities responded to the wreckage of a small aircraft. The incident, occurring just after 2 PM, has prompted a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Flightradar24 data reveals the aircraft, a 1970 Beagle B121 Pup registered as G-AZDG, deviated significantly from its planned route. Instead of landing at London Southend Airport, its final moments were recorded as a descent into the reservoir at 2:03 PM.
The plane had departed from North Weald Airfield earlier that day, at 11:54 AM, embarking on what should have been a routine flight. Preliminary flight path information suggests the aircraft was performing maneuvers above the reservoir shortly before the catastrophic event.
A multidisciplinary team from the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) has been dispatched to the site, working alongside Essex Police to piece together the events leading up to the crash. Chief Superintendent Waheed Khan emphasized the investigation is in its early stages, focusing on establishing a clear understanding of what transpired.
Hanningfield Reservoir Nature Discovery Park, managed by Essex Wildlife Trust, has been temporarily closed to the public. The Trust is cooperating fully with emergency services, stating they are unable to provide further comment at this time.
The closure is expected to remain in effect at least through the following day, with updates to be provided via official channels as the investigation progresses. A somber atmosphere has settled over the area, with flowers already being laid near the site as a tribute.
Both Southend Airport and North Weald Airfield have refrained from commenting on the incident, deferring to the ongoing police investigation. Epping Forest District Council, owner of North Weald Airfield, has also declined to offer statements.
The AAIB confirmed the launch of a formal investigation, deploying a team of specialized inspectors to meticulously examine the wreckage and gather crucial evidence. The focus remains on determining the cause of this tragic accident.
