The White House has announced that an American woman, Dena Karari, has been released from Iranian custody after being wrongfully detained for the past 18 months.
Karari, an Iranian-American citizen, was reportedly accused of espionage due to her work with a U.S.-registered nonprofit that provided humanitarian assistance to impoverished children in rural Iran.
President Donald Trump credited the Iranian government for releasing Karari, calling it a "gesture of goodwill." He expressed gratitude to Iran, stating, "The United States of America appreciates this gesture of Goodwill by Iran!"
Karari's release marks the first time an American has been freed from Iranian custody since 2023, amidst ongoing military confrontations between Washington and Tehran.
According to her attorney, Jared Genser, Karari was "trapped in Iran on bogus charges of collaboration with a hostile state and espionage" but is now on her way back to the United States.
Genser emphasized that Karari was never formally imprisoned but was effectively held in Iran through a "coercive exit ban." She reportedly suffered enormous physical and psychological hardship during her detention.
The release of Karari has raised hopes for the release of other American hostages held in Iran, including Kamran Hekmati and Reza Valizadeh, who have been held since 2025 and 2024, respectively.
A U.S. State Department official stated that President Trump is working to secure the release of detained Americans around the world, and that the Iranian regime has a history of unjustly detaining foreign nationals as hostages for political leverage.
Iran has frequently targeted individuals who hold both American and Iranian citizenship, limiting their access to U.S. consular assistance.
The release of Karari comes as the U.S. and Iran engage in military confrontations, with the U.S. government urging Iran to drop all charges against those who worked locally in support of the Children of Mehr Foundation.
