A bison attack on July 10 at Yellowstone National Park’s Bridge Bay Campground left a 60‑year‑old grandfather with a broken femur and a grandson who escaped unharmed.
The grandfather recounted seeing the animal and realizing it had chosen him as a target. He was thrown into the air, landing on a tree and sustaining a fractured femur at four distinct sites.
He underwent surgery to repair the broken bone and has been recovering at a hospital in Southwest Montana.
Throughout the incident, he focused on protecting his grandson, instructing him to move to the amphitheater while he confronted the bison.
A photographer present at the scene described how the bison had charged a group of teenagers before stopping near the campground. After witnessing the attack, the photographer ran to distract the animal and helped the injured grandfather.
The bison had previously charged teenagers who scattered, prompting the photographer to alert other campers and assist until the animal retreated. Campers quickly moved to safety as the bison withdrew.
The grandfather has reported feeling safe and secure during his treatment, expressing confidence in the care he received.
