FAA warns of safety risks as July's largest air event nears

The Federal Aviation Administration projects that more than 56,000 flights will take off across the United States on Thursday, July 9.

The forecast lists 56,311 flights, only eight fewer than the 56,319 flights that marked the busiest day of the year on June 25.

The peak travel day falls nearly a week after the Fourth of July, a timing that may surprise some travelers who expect the holiday weekend to be the busiest.

Experts attribute the mid‑July surge to shifting summer vacation patterns, with many travelers extending their Fourth of July trips and returning during this period.

"This unusual mid‑July surge is due to peak summer vacation travel and people returning from extended Fourth of July trips," an industry analyst noted.

Travelers can reduce the likelihood of delays by booking nonstop flights whenever possible and selecting early morning departures, which typically experience fewer disruptions.

Planning ahead and choosing direct routes with early departure times can help travelers navigate the anticipated crowds on this busy day.
