Former President Trump announced he will not attend this year’s Super Bowl, citing both the distance to California and his disapproval of the halftime performers.
He recalled attending last year’s game in New Orleans, emphasizing a warm reception from fans. “I would, I’ve [gotten] great hands [at] the Super Bowl. They like me,” he stated, framing the California location as unnecessarily remote.
The Super Bowl is scheduled to be held at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The former president suggested a shorter travel distance might have swayed his decision.
Trump has previously voiced strong criticism of this year’s headlining performer, Bad Bunny, admitting he was unfamiliar with the artist. He questioned the selection, labeling it “crazy” and blaming entertainment promoters.
Adding to the lineup is the rock band Green Day, whose frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong, has also been publicly critical of the former president. Both artists have a history of advocating for progressive causes.
Bad Bunny expressed concerns about potential ICE detentions at his U.S. concerts, leading him to prioritize a residency in his native Puerto Rico. He used his platform to advocate for immigrants, acknowledging their vital contributions to the country.
Armstrong has made stark comparisons between Trump and historical figures, and Green Day has adapted lyrics in their performances to directly protest the “MAGA agenda.”
Trump characterized the performers as divisive, claiming they “sow hatred” and represent a “terrible choice” for the Super Bowl halftime show. He firmly stated, “I’m anti-them.”
Last year’s halftime show featured Kendrick Lamar alongside a diverse group of artists including SZA, Jon Batiste, and Lauren Daigle.
The teams vying for a spot in the Super Bowl are the Seattle Seahawks-Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots-Denver Broncos, with the championship games scheduled for Sunday, February 8th.
