A Hamilton couple initially facing arson charges now stand accused of a disturbing pattern of elder abuse and auto theft, a case that has rapidly expanded since December.
The investigation began with a series of deliberately set fires at a home in the Stipley neighbourhood, starting on December 13th. Investigators quickly determined that the residence and an associated outbuilding were targeted on four separate occasions, causing an estimated $100,000 in damage.
Following the fires, a search warrant led to the arrest of Nicholas Tomasetti, 28, and Kayla Harris, 23. Authorities opposed bail for both, sensing a deeper complexity to the case than initially met the eye.
That intuition proved correct. Further investigation revealed a chilling narrative of prolonged abuse directed towards an elderly individual. Evidence gathered through witness statements and additional search warrants painted a disturbing picture of systematic mistreatment.
The couple is now accused of physically assaulting the victim, forcibly confining them, and making repeated threats, even resorting to weapons during the abuse. The investigation uncovered a deliberate and sustained campaign of harm.
The scope of the crimes broadened further with the discovery of stolen vehicles and related proceeds at properties linked to Tomasetti and Harris. Vehicle examinations confirmed that several cars had been stolen and illegally re-identified.
Tomasetti now faces a lengthy list of upgraded charges, including possession of stolen property exceeding $5,000, tampering with vehicle identification numbers, and multiple counts of assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, and uttering threats. Harris also faces significant new charges, including assault and possession of stolen property.
Police believe the incidents were specifically targeted, and while they currently assess the risk to the public, the investigation remains active and ongoing. The full extent of the couple’s alleged crimes continues to unfold.
Detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward, seeking to piece together the complete story of this escalating case and bring all responsible parties to justice.
