Erskine-Smith LAUNCHES Leadership BID: Ontario Liberals, Prepare for WAR!

A political earthquake is reshaping the landscape of Scarborough Southwest. Beaches–East York MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith has announced his intention to contest the upcoming provincial byelection, simultaneously reigniting his ambition to lead the Ontario Liberal Party.

The dominoes began to fall with the resignation of Scarborough Southwest MP Bill Blair, who is poised to become Canada’s next High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. This departure triggered a flurry of activity, a swift game of political maneuvering amongst key players.

In a surprising turn, NDP MPP Doly Begum has shifted her focus, declaring her candidacy for Blair’s vacated federal seat. She’s leaving her position at Queen’s Park to compete for the Scarborough Southwest federal Liberal nomination.

Beaches-East York MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith speaks to reporters outside of the Liberal caucus room on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

Erskine-Smith, a 41-year-old who previously served as a federal housing minister, sees an opportunity to make a greater impact closer to home. He believes his efforts are best directed towards rebuilding the provincial Liberal party and delivering results for Ontario.

This isn’t a new ambition for Erskine-Smith. He previously challenged Bonnie Crombie for the Ontario Liberal leadership in 2023, while still serving as a federal MP. Now, with a clear path emerging, he’s assembling a team ready to compete, win, and govern.

Despite his provincial aspirations, Erskine-Smith insists he remains a supporter of Prime Minister Mark Carney and intends to remain an active member of the federal Liberal caucus during the transition. He’s committed to a smooth handover while pursuing his new goals.

The timing aligns with a broader shift within the Ontario Liberal Party. Bonnie Crombie stepped down as leader in mid-January, creating a leadership vacuum. The party is expected to unveil the rules for the upcoming leadership race next Monday.

Erskine-Smith is the first to publicly declare his candidacy, stepping forward after Burlington MP Karina Gould considered and then ultimately dismissed a run, choosing to continue serving her constituents in Ottawa.

Currently, Ottawa South MPP John Fraser is serving as interim leader – a role he’s taken on three times previously. However, Fraser has stated he won’t be a contender for the permanent leadership position, instead focusing on facilitating a fair and robust leadership process for the party.

The dates for both the federal and provincial byelections in Scarborough Southwest remain unconfirmed, but the stage is now set for a compelling political battle, with significant implications for both levels of government.
