Before embracing the world of food, Gemma served her country in the Italian Army, followed by a period working as a barista. These experiences instilled a discipline and work ethic that would prove invaluable as she navigated the demanding world of professional kitchens.
Her true culinary awakening happened in Scotland, starting with a humble position in a café. Through sheer grit and a thirst for knowledge, she rose through the ranks, learning the intricacies of cooking entirely through hands-on experience.
Gemma steadily progressed, eventually becoming a sous chef in kitchens often dominated by men. She embraced the challenge, constantly learning and refining her skills through self-education and relentless practice.
A profound passion for plant-based cuisine began to blossom within her. Entirely self-taught, she dedicated herself to mastering the art of vegan cooking, driven by a desire to create something truly special.
Inspired by her Italian heritage, Gemma began experimenting with bold flavors, crafting dishes designed to redefine perceptions of vegan food. She aimed to prove that plant-based cuisine could be both exciting and deeply satisfying.
In 2024, fueled by a desire for independence and a frustration with the wastefulness she witnessed in traditional kitchens, Gemma and her wife Marta launched Planet G. This 100% plant-based catering and food truck championed sustainability, flavor, and inclusivity.
Early success followed, with Planet G winning a prestigious award at the Scottish Street Food Awards in its first year. However, their momentum was abruptly halted when their food truck was involved in a devastating accident, forcing a temporary closure.
Undeterred, Gemma demonstrated remarkable resilience. She quickly pivoted, establishing a production kitchen and expanding Planet G’s presence into Edinburgh’s thriving market scene, catering for weddings and events.
Now, Gemma stands poised to showcase her culinary vision on the national stage, competing on MasterChef: The Professionals. She’s determined to demonstrate the incredible potential of plant-based cuisine to a wider audience.
Gemma isn’t the only Edinburgh talent vying for the title this year. Chefs Emma Hanley and Dhananjai Dacha also feature, bringing their own unique skills and perspectives to the competition.
