Despite the overwhelming positivity, disturbing comments surfaced. Some individuals openly expressed indifference to the potential consequences of withholding support, even suggesting that people attempting the dangerous Channel crossing should be left to drown. Such callousness was met with widespread condemnation.
However, Nic believes the rapid success of the fundraiser – exceeding £1,000 in a remarkably short time – proves a vital point. It demonstrates that compassion and empathy can overcome hatred and prejudice.
This isn’t the first time the RNLI has faced these accusations. Over the past few years, prominent figures have publicly questioned the charity’s motives, falsely alleging it facilitates illegal immigration.
