A mass shooting at the Salsa on St. Clair festival on Saturday night resulted in two fatalities and multiple injuries, prompting the cancellation of the festival’s final day.
Police Chief Myron Demkiw pledged a thorough investigation, stating that all necessary resources would be deployed and that the public would be kept informed as the case progresses.
Deputy Chief Frank Barredo reported the incident as an “exchange of gunfire” that occurred at approximately 8:12 p.m. near the intersection of St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue. Two firearms were recovered, and three separate crime scenes are under investigation. Roughly 13,000 attendees were present during the chaotic event.

Injuries were reported among a 40‑year‑old man, a 19‑year‑old woman, and another female, with four individuals hospitalized.
Organizers of Salsa on St. Clair announced the event’s cancellation, expressing shock and deep sadness over the violence and extending condolences to the victims’ families.
Councillor Josh Matlow described the scene as surreal, noting the helicopter overhead and the rapid response of officers, and offered gratitude to emergency services and condolences to those affected.

Mayor Olivia Chow condemned the shooting as a reckless, despicable act, vowing to ensure police have the resources needed to locate those responsible and to reduce gun presence on city streets.
Deputy Mayor and Councillor Mike Colle criticized current gun laws as weak, calling for the elimination of easy bail and dropping charges for gun offenders.
