The latest data breach has left nearly 7 million individuals' identities at risk of being used for fraud and theft. AssuranceAmerica, an insurance company offering auto and renters policies to residents across a dozen states, recently disclosed the breach, which occurred in March of this year.
The breach occurred when an "unauthorized third party" was able to obtain and copy data files containing customers' personal information, including names, contact information, auto insurance policy or account information, driver or vehicle information, information related to claims, and driver's license numbers.
The stolen driver's license numbers pose a particularly high risk, as they can be used by scammers to open financial accounts in the victim's name, create fake IDs, change their mailing address, or generate an entirely new identity to commit fraud.
AssuranceAmerica is expected to send notices to affected consumers starting on July 10. If you've held a policy with the company, you should keep an eye on your mailbox and take precautions if AssuranceAmerica has any of your data.
Look for subtle signs of identity theft, and consider taking additional steps to protect your identity. Running a background check on yourself and requesting your driving record can help you spot any fraudulent or criminal activity carried out under your identity.
Requesting a new license number from your state's department of motor vehicles may also be an option if you have a police report or evidence that yours has been used fraudulently. Staying vigilant and taking proactive measures can help minimize the risk of identity theft.
