Andre Onana’s time at Manchester United appeared to be over when he departed on loan, yet the goalkeeper harbors a resolute belief in reclaiming his position.
Signed from Inter Milan in 2023, Onana quickly established himself as the first-choice keeper, amassing 102 appearances across all competitions for the Red Devils.
The arrival of Senne Lammens last summer dramatically altered the landscape, leading to Onana’s temporary move to Turkish side Trabzonspor.
His single appearance this season proved a painful memory – a Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town that underscored his diminished role.
While Onana was sidelined, Lammens seized the opportunity, impressing immediately and securing the starting spot, even displacing Altay Bayindir early in the campaign.
A return to the first eleven seems improbable given Lammens’ form, but Onana intends to return for pre-season training, his future heavily dependent on the managerial situation at the club.
Geremi, a former Chelsea and Newcastle midfielder and close confidant of Onana, reveals the goalkeeper is eager to compete and contribute to a revitalized Manchester United.
“I know Andre very well, and during his time at United, many things weren’t right,” Geremi explained. “It wasn’t solely his issue. But with Michael Carrick’s arrival, things are looking promising for everyone, including him.”
Geremi emphasized Onana’s exceptional talent, stating his abilities are rare and that the next step is to fight for his place in the team.
“Andre consistently rises to challenges,” Geremi continued. “He flourishes when given a genuine opportunity to prove his worth.”
Drawing from his own decorated career – including two Premier League titles and two Champions League victories – Geremi spoke of the importance of competition within a squad.
“I thrived in teams with ambition and strong personalities,” he said. “When I faced setbacks, there were always players pushing for my spot, forcing me to perform.”
The decision, ultimately, rests with Onana, but Geremi believes he possesses the character to confront the challenge.
Lammens’ performances have drawn widespread acclaim, notably from opposing managers like Everton’s David Moyes, who recently hailed him as Manchester United’s standout player in a 1-0 victory.
“Their goalkeeper was brilliant tonight,” Moyes conceded. “The save from Michael Keane, his command of the area, and his handling of corners – he was the best player on the pitch.”
