For years, travelers passing through Miami International Airport have known Gate D60 as a place to endure, not enjoy. Situated at the far end of Concourse D, it’s a stark, utilitarian space serving a multitude of regional jets – a holding area that felt more functional than welcoming.
Many frequent flyers likened it to the infamous Gate 35X at Reagan National, a space once widely criticized for its discomfort and inefficiency. That gate is now history, and a similar fate awaits D60, but not through closure, rather through a complete and dramatic transformation.
By 2030, a billion-dollar expansion will replace the current Gate D60, ushering in a new era of comfort and convenience. The project promises a three-level concourse extension boasting seventeen gates, each equipped with direct passenger boarding bridges.

Initial designs reveal a space bathed in natural light, shielded from the intense Florida sun by a striking metal lattice. At the heart of the extension, a central rotunda with a rooftop clerestory will illuminate a lush interior garden, creating a calming oasis within the bustling airport.
The existing Concourse D, a product of nearly two decades of planning and revisions dating back to 1995, was originally intended to streamline operations by consolidating multiple finger concourses into a single, linear structure. While functional, it lacked the aesthetic appeal and passenger amenities now being prioritized.

Construction is slated to begin in 2027 as part of a larger, $9 billion airport-wide improvement program. This ambitious plan includes the complete overhaul of concourses F and G, alongside upgrades to numerous airport facilities.
