Joe Rogan and comedian Andrew Schulz shared a laugh over the fact that Canada pushes Indigenous land acknowledgments ahead of some public and government-sponsored events.

During a lengthy chat on an episode of the Joe Rogan Podcast , Rogan spoke about former Vice President Kamala Harris’ declaration in 2021 that the U.S. “must not shy away” from its “shameful past” of European explorers who she said ushered “in a wave of devastation for tribal nations.”

“Since 1934, every October, the United States has recognized the voyage of the European explorers who first landed on the shores of the Americas,” Harris said during the National Congress of American Indians’ 78th Annual Convention on Oct. 12, 2021, according to Fox News .

“But that is not the whole story. That has never been the whole story,” Harris continued. “Those explorers ushered in a wave of devastation for tribal nations – perpetrating violence, stealing land and spreading disease. We must not shy away from this shameful past, and we must shed light on it and do everything we can to address the impact of the past on Native communities today.”

Performing on reserve land in Canada

“Did you see her Columbus Day message to America?” Rogan asked Schulz. “Oh God. It was like, ‘Don’t forget the horrors that the Europeans … Jesus Christ. Scolding!”

“I think it’s funny when governments do these things to like enforce care,” Schulz replied.

Schulz then recounted his experiences performing in Canada on reserve land and being asked to read an Indigenous land acknowledgment before his show.

“I remember the first time they told me, I was like, ‘You want me to do what?’” Schulz recalled saying in response. “I remember telling it to the chief of the tribe, like, ‘Brother, that kind of seems like I’m bragging,'” he said. “I’m going up there and being like, ‘This used to be yours, but the boys came in and got y’all the f*** outta here.’ You really want me to go and remind everybody what happened before the comedy show?'”

‘We stole it, but it’s ours now’

Rogan said his “favourite part” of the land acknowledgments is the fact they are read with the tacit understanding that “we’re not giving it back.”

“We stole it, but it’s ours now. Sorry…sorry, we’re going to acknowledge the fact that we’re on stolen land,” joked Rogan. “But the thing is, the people that go along with that are the same people that want no borders and (think) no one is illegal being anywhere. Like Christopher Columbus is the only immigrant they hate … There’s no borders, no one’s illegal, but yet these people shouldn’t have been here.”

“We let a Spanish-speaking guy into America once … went great,” Schulz said as the two burst into laughter.

As Rogan recounted bloody chapters in the conquest of America, Schulz implied the past should stay in the past.

“F***ed up s*** happened,” he said. “Human beings do f***ed up s***. It is what it is. We’re here now. What are we going to do now? … You go into the doctor and you got lung cancer and the doctor’s like, ‘Let’s talk about all them cigarettes you were smoking.’ And it’s like, ‘Why don’t we talk about all that chemo you’re going to give me? Tell me what we’re going to do now to get rid of this s***?'”

Dallas Brodie, the MLA for Vancouver-Quilchena, launched a new political party in June called One B.C. that promises to “defund the reconciliation industry,” “eradicate gender ideology,” “end mass immigration” and “unapologetically advance pro-family policies.”

Recently, Brodie proposed private member’s bill, called the Land Acknowledgement Prohibition Act, which pushed for no acknowledgements to be made “that deny the sovereignty of the Crown within British Columbia or that attribute collective guilt to individuals based on race, ancestry or the actions of Canadian historical figures.”

Members of B.C’s Legislative Assembly  voted down the proposed act this week .
