Gold Ring Discovered in 2,000-Year-Old Grave Reveals Secret

Gold Ring Discovered in 2,000-Year-Old Grave Reveals Secret

Archaeologists uncovered two gold rings at an ancient burial site in Thailand, one bearing a 2,000‑year‑old inscription. The rings date back roughly 2,000 years and were found during a dig that began in late June.

The find was made at the Don Yai Thong site in Phetchaburi Province, located about 80 miles southwest of Bangkok. The site was only recently identified after bronze drum fragments were discovered in a rice field earlier in the year.

The rings were buried alongside human bones, indicating they were part of a burial ceremony. Eight human skeletons, bronze and gold jewelry, pottery, and other artifacts were also recovered.

One of the rings features a short engraving on its oval face. Experts believe the inscription is written in ancient Brahmi script and reads "pusarakhitasa," meaning "the one protected by Pushya."

Pushya, a lunar constellation in ancient Indian astronomy, was associated with good fortune and protection, suggesting the inscription served as a blessing for the deceased.

The second ring is well preserved but lacks any decorative pattern. Its plain design may reflect the owner's social status.

Scholars suggest the owner belonged to the Vaishya class, traditionally associated with merchants and traders in the ancient Indian caste system.

Excavation of the site will continue until July, after which the artifacts will be prepared for public display.

The discovery contributes to a broader understanding of trade and cultural exchange between ancient India and Southeast Asia.

The find underscores the value of ongoing archaeological work in uncovering long‑lost artifacts and shedding light on past societies.
