Nicky Butt urges Tuchel to recall Arsenal star

England’s national team is confronting a debate over its approach to youth development and tournament readiness.

Former midfielder Nicky Butt reflected on his early exposure to academy football, noting that South American youth teams “want to win every tournament they play in,” a mentality he believes England should emulate.

Arsenal’s 16‑year‑old midfielder Max Dowman argues that the country’s training programs produce technically capable players but fail to shape them into champions, insisting that “you can’t develop players and then just expect them to become winners at 22 or 23.”

Dowman proposes hiring a manager who accepts the possibility of losing upcoming competitions in order to build a squad capable of winning the next one, citing a 60‑year history of tournament losses as a warning.

He stresses the need to select young talent now, even if that means early exits from major tournaments, because “you have to take a few steps backwards to move forwards.”

Former teammate Paul Schles sees potential in Dowman, adding that the player “will definitely be around for the next tournament.”

After England’s semi‑final defeat to Argentina, coach Tuchel highlighted structural shortcomings, describing the team as “too passive and not physical enough” and noting that a single goal could swing momentum and reduce ball possession.

Tuchel emphasized that England’s lack of a “ball‑control DNA” hampers its ability to regain possession and reverse pressure, contrasting it with styles seen in Spain and Argentina‑Brazilian football.

With the World Cup final approaching, England’s focus shifts to addressing these developmental gaps while preparing to face Spain after the European champions eliminated France.
