Austin police release bodycam footage of fatal shooting

A fatal shooting occurred Saturday morning in downtown Austin when a man was shot by police after allegedly pointing a weapon at a group of runners.

Body‑camera footage released by the department shows an officer exiting a cruiser and walking toward a YMCA where an outdoor yoga class was underway under a tent.

As the officer approached, a man on an e‑scooter entered the tent area. The officer repeatedly shouted for the individual to stop, but the man fled, abandoning the scooter.

In this screengrab of police body camera footage, an Austin police officer is seen point his gun at a suspect accused of threatening people on the street with a gun.

Police pursued the suspect across a parking lot into a nearby field, where a second officer joined the chase. The pursuit ended when the suspect was found on the ground, holding a firearm toward the officer.

After the suspect raised the gun, the officer fired multiple shots, and the man collapsed. Officers immediately administered life‑saving measures until paramedics arrived.

The deceased was identified as 29‑year‑old Emmanuel Diaz.

Earlier in the day, a 911 call was made reporting a man who had pointed a gun at a group of runners after one runner asked him to slow down while riding an e‑scooter. Police responded within two minutes, but the suspect had already left the scene.

Approximately two hours later, authorities located Diaz near the YMCA on an urban trail, where the fatal encounter took place.
