A dramatic rescue mission unfolded on the Brooklyn Bridge on the evening of July 8, after a woman in distress climbed up onto the bridge and began traversing its suspension cables. The incident brought traffic to a standstill for over two hours, as New York City police officers sprang into action to try and prevent a tragedy.
Video footage and body-cam recordings show an officer from the Emergency Services Unit attempting to persuade the unidentified woman to accept his help. The officer, who introduced himself and expressed his genuine concern for her well-being, urged the woman not to pursue what he described as a "permanent solution to a temporary problem."
The officer's conversation with the woman lasted nearly an hour, as he sought to establish a connection and encourage her to accept assistance. He assured her that he didn't know what she was going through, but he wanted to understand, and emphasized that accepting help was the strongest thing she could do.
As the situation unfolded, the woman appeared to resist the officers' efforts to safely harness her, prompting the officer to plead with her not to take any action. He repeatedly reassured her that everything would be okay and that she was not in trouble, before he and other ESU officers escorted her back down the bridge.
The incident began around 7:40 p.m., with the eastbound lanes of the bridge reopening around 10 p.m. The woman, who was taken into custody, has a history of mental health issues. The police response was marked by extraordinary care, courage, and compassion, as officers worked to safely de-escalate the situation and rescue the woman.
