George Birmingham, 46, was taken into custody early Sunday morning after police alleged he murdered veteran Justin Elrod and his wife, Lena Elrod, in what investigators say was a burglary that turned deadly.
The Elrods were found dead at approximately 12:15 a.m. on a Sunday. Prosecutors say Birmingham used an electric saw to kill Lena and struck or stabbed Justin in the head with a metal object.
Social media posts from Birmingham suggest a long‑standing friendship with the Elrods, dating back almost a decade. Friends and family photos from the couple appeared on his public profiles for years.
In a June 16 post, Birmingham listed the Elrods among the companions he would choose for a hypothetical trip to Mars, describing them as “the best listeners” and “the most fun to argue with.” He closed the entry with a statement of affection.
Earlier in 2017, Birmingham shared a GoFundMe campaign to cover a child’s medical expenses for the family and later hosted a benefit comedy show in May to raise additional funds.
A June 2018 post highlighted one of the Elrods’ daughters, labeling her “one of my favorite ladies” and including a photograph with her parents.
Investigators have not identified a motive, noting that Birmingham was an acquaintance of the couple. He also is a suspect in a prior burglary that occurred before the murders.
Charges brought against Birmingham include one count of capital murder, two counts of murder, one count of burglary, and several drug‑related offenses. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 20.
Officials described Justin Elrod as a hardworking, humble individual who had survived military service and a career in the prison system, noting that the tragedy was unexpected and devastating for the community.
