Tucson downtown mass shooting kills 10 in crowded entertainment

At least 10 people were wounded in a mass shooting in downtown Tucson, Arizona, early Sunday morning after a gunman opened fire in a crowded entertainment district.

No deaths were reported. Nine victims suffered gunshot wounds, primarily to their extremities including arms and legs, while a tenth person was also injured in the incident.

The shooting unfolded around 2 a.m. in the 100 block of East Congress Street, a downtown area known for its bars, restaurants, and nightlife.

Officers patrolling nearby heard multiple gunshots and responded on foot, encountering a man running from the scene.

The suspect allegedly ignored repeated commands from officers before a uniformed officer fired, striking the fleeing individual.

The suspect was taken into custody and received first aid before being transported to a local hospital in life-threatening condition.

Responding officers provided emergency medical aid to several victims before firefighters arrived. All were taken to local hospitals for treatment, and no officers were injured.

The mayor described the event as a serious and senseless act of gun violence, noting that a shooter recklessly opened fire in a crowded area before being stopped by police.

She credited the quick actions of firefighters and police for stabilizing all victims and expressed hope for their recovery.

The county sheriff's department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, while local police will conduct a separate review for potential policy violations.

The mayor also condemned the shooting and pointed to weak state gun safety laws as a contributing factor.

She urged lawmakers to act on universal background checks, extreme risk laws, and violence prevention funding to reduce public risk.
