NORAD confirmed on Sunday that F-16 fighter jets intercepted multiple general aviation aircraft that entered restricted airspace over Bedminster and East Rutherford, New Jersey.
More than ten civilian aircraft breached the temporary flight restrictions, with three requiring direct interception by military jets.
During two of the intercepts, NORAD aircraft deployed flares to alert the pilots, a maneuver that may have been visible to residents on the ground.
Officials stated the flares were used with strict safety protocols, burn out rapidly, and present no threat to people below.
All intercepted aircraft were safely escorted out of the restricted zone by NORAD fighters.
In the event of an interception, pilots are instructed to switch to frequency 121.5 or 243.0 and reverse course until further guidance is provided.
NORAD emphasized that all pilots must review active temporary flight restrictions and Notices to Airmen before operating near restricted airspace.
