A columnist argued that a pattern of political violence is emerging, with some individuals justifying assassination attempts against the president.
He cited survey data indicating that 56% of those who vote Democratic believe the assassination of the president would be at least somewhat justified.
The survey was conducted using intelligence analysis and found that 38% of all respondents said murdering the president would be at least somewhat justified.
Among self-identified left-of-center respondents, 56% said such an act would be at least somewhat justified, according to the report.
The commentator pointed to the fatal shooting of a conservative activist at a university event as further evidence of the trend.
He noted that many celebrated the killing online, despite the activist engaging in public debate protected by the First Amendment.
He also referenced public support for a man accused of killing a healthcare executive, including over one million dollars in crowdfunding raised on his behalf.
The analyst attributed part of the problem to social media, saying it amplifies hatred and contributes to a worsening climate.
He warned that unless the rhetoric reverses at a global level, the normalization of political violence will continue to escalate.
