Dumisani Mbebe Leads Cast

The upcoming Kenyan music romance drama feature "Tides" is set to premiere at Century Cinemax on August 8, followed by additional screenings across Century Cinemax locations in Nairobi.

Set at the Kenyan coast, the film follows Salma and Biko, a musician couple struggling to make ends meet as dwindling gig opportunities and mounting financial pressure threaten to tear them apart.

The film stars Sarah Hassan, Brian Kabugi, Minne Kariuki, Dumisani Mbebe, Sikukuu Hamisi Jumaa, Zippy Okoth, Andrew Muthure, and Muthoni Gathecha in key roles.

"In a world where poverty can strip people of dignity and opportunity, moral choices are rarely black and white," says the film's writer and director, Reuben Odanga.

The film was inspired by the complex relationships between tourists and locals at the Kenyan coast, and Odanga wanted to explore the human realities behind these encounters and the intersection of poverty, desire, power, and survival.

Tides features original songs created specifically for the film, which were composed by award-winning singer-songwriter Silayio.

For Odanga, music was a necessary element of the story, and he credits Silayio with convincing him to incorporate it into the film.

Working on Tides gave Silayio the opportunity to explore new musical genres and combine her passions for acting, singing, and songwriting.

The film is produced by Winnie Adisa, with Jim Bishop serving as director of photography, Nice Githinji as intimacy coordinator, Shiko Daisy as production designer, and Angela Ciruma as head of styling and wardrobe.

Tickets for the premiere are available.
