A man was detained Thursday after bypassing security at the Today show studios in New York while searching for a specific anchor. The individual entered a restricted vestibule near Studio 1A and approached co‑host Craig Melvin. Security personnel responded promptly and took the suspect into custody.
According to witnesses, the man lunged at Melvin and shouted a racial slur before being restrained. No injuries were reported, and the broadcast resumed shortly after the incident.
Police arrived at the scene at approximately 09:19 a.m. and placed the individual, identified as Andrew Truelove, into custody. Authorities confirmed the investigation remains ongoing.
The studio issued a statement confirming the security breach, noting that the anchor alerted staff and that law‑enforcement officials handled the detention without further incident. The network emphasized its commitment to reviewing security protocols and ensuring a safe environment for employees, talent, and guests.
Separately, co‑anchor Savannah Guthrie announced she will be away from the program for several weeks to film a new Wordle‑based game show. She expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming production and indicated the season will be filmed in the coming weeks.
